Game Drive Activities


Morning Game Drive

Departure: 06h30
Return: 12h30

Departure from the front verandah of the hotel. Tea and coffee served prior to departure. Being adjacent to the Addo Park, the drive and narration starts from the hotel. We enter the main gate of the Park and the rest of the morning will be spent in the Park. The first few hours are good to see Antelope, Zebra and some of the cats. Between 09h00 and 09h30 a continental breakfast will be served in a picnic area. Usually there a good sightings of elephants and buffalo after 10h00 nearer the waterholes. We return to Addo main camp around 12h00. The park is over 27,000 hectares with thick bush and there are interesting sightings. Refreshments are available throughout the drive.

Afternoon Game Drive

Departure: 13h30
Return: 18h30

Departure from the front verandah of the hotel. The narration will commence from the hotel and we will enjoy a scenic drive down the pass. Game may be sighted on-route to the park. The early afternoon is good for elephant and buffalo sightings, near the water holes, as well as some antelope and zebra. We will stop mid-afternoon at a disembarkment point or picnic area for teas, coffee, refreshments scones and snacks. The latter part of the afternoon is usually good for antelope and the illusive rhino. The park is over 27,000 hectares with thick bush and offers an abundance of birds, tortoise, dung beetles and other creatures. Our well skilled guides will do their best to provide you with an unforgettable game experience.

Full Day Game Drive

Departure: 08h00
Return: 18h00

After an early breakfast 07h30 we will depart on the game drive at 08h00 from the hotel. Our drive will start from the hotel down the scenic Zuurberg Pass. Our well experienced and enthusiastic guides will do their best to locate as much of the game available in the area during the drive. The park is 27,000 hectares and characterized by dense bush. Fortunately, you are elevated in the Land rover and have a good opportunity to have good and close sightings. You will stop between 10h00 and 11h00 for tea and scones. At 13h00 to 14h00 we will stop at a picnic site for about an hour to enjoy a traditional braai lunch. Depending on our sightings we will return to the main camp between 17h00 and 17h30 and then return to the hotel. As this game drive covers all time periods of the day you will have the opportunity to see most game species.

Wilderness Drive – Full Day

Return: 18h00

After a hearty 07h30 breakfast we depart from the hotel at 08h00. The wilderness drive traverses the Zuurberg section of the Greater Addo National Park. The trip is very scenic and you have expansive views in the mountains and far into the Karroo. The route goes through 5 different biomes of the 9 in the world. Thus you will get a great variety of flora and fauna.

The terrains is rugged and the route is graded a 3.5 difficulty 4×4 route, so you will get a 4×4 experience and see what the vehicles are capable of traversing. For those that have not been off road before this would be a good experience.

Game will be sighted during the trip offering a variety of antelope, rhino, leopard, baboon etc. but we must emphasise that it is not primarily a game drive and game sightings are usually in the morning or late afternoon.

Various tea stops and a picnic lunch will be offered on route. It is circular route and you cannot opt out half way. The trip is not recommended for persons over 70 unless they are healthy and children under 3.

The wilderness trip is a unique and an excellent experience for the adventurous and is only offered by the hotel. The trip will not be done after heavy rains or while it is raining for safety reasons.

THE 145 000 HECTARE GREATER ADDO NATIONAL PARK surrounds the hotel where a range of spectacular horse-riding and hiking trails can be experienced from beginners to the more advanced.

Mountain zebra, eland, kudu, bushbuck, duiker, red hartebeest and other endemic game of the area can be encountered as well as prolific birdlife – the Forest Weaver and Knysna Loerie to name a few. Rhino can be viewed at Darlington Dam after a rugged 4×4 trail. From indigenous riverine forests to mountain fynbos the Greater Addo Park, including the Zuurberg Mountains, protects some of the last remaining vegetation of the region.

  • Elephant Back Safaris

    Elephant Back Safaris is located 30 minutes from the Hotel. Enjoy a guided walk as you follow the elephants as they behave in their natural habitat. You might even see these Gentle Giants swim as you go past the watering hole. The ultimate elephant experience.

  • Horse riding trails

    Horse riding trails are offered in the Zuurberg section of the Addo Park only 500 meters from the Hotel. Enjoy a 1 hour, 3 hour or 5 hour trail; both beginners and experienced riders are both welcome.

  • The Wilderness Trail

    The Wilderness Trail is a full day 4×4 trail through the remote areas of the Addo Park. This trail offers spectacular “untouched” scenery as you go through 5 biomes. A must for someone that enjoys awesome views and has a keen sense for 4×4 adventures.

  • Amakhala Game Reserve

    Amakhala Game Reserve is located 90 minutes from the Hotel. Day visitors are offered a big-five game experience. The program is an afternoon/evening program including a game drive through the reserve, a river cruise on the bushman’s river with cheese and wine and a 3 course Boma dinner.

  • Schotia Safaris

    Schotia Safaris is approximately 1 hour from the Hotel and offers a great experience, which includes 2 game drives in open game viewers on the reserve and a tasty Boma dinner. If lion sightings are on the top of your list, then Schotia Safaris is a must.

  • Zuurberg’s Guided Walking Trails

    Zuurberg’s Guided walking trails are done by qualified guides and usually last for two hours followed by refreshments. During the walk you are likely to see an assortment of antelope, zebra and wildebeests.
